Wasn’t it just yesterday that she was taking her first steps, then trotting off to school, going on her first date, graduating from high school, and finally leaving home? The beauty and challenge of motherhood is that as tightly as you would like to hold on to your precious one, you continually need to let go. And with each letting go, you watch her step further into the unique woman that she is, embracing her strengths, challenging her weaknesses, learning what it is to be human. And now she is getting married.

The Real Reason You Have to Buy Your Wedding Dress So Far in Advance

You’re newly engaged, and you’re excited… to go wedding-dress shopping! And while your wedding date (if you’ve even set one yet) may seem like it’s ages away, it’s actually a good idea to head to the bridal salon sooner rather than later. The reason? A made-to-order wedding dress from a bridal salon takes about six to nine months to make! Sometimes it may take a little longer. So gather your hand selected family or friends that will to help you say YES to your dress! Aside from the fact that it may take you some time to find the One, you’ll need to perfectly time your three MAYBE four fittings, allowing for custom alterations and then some more custom alterations. To help explain why it takes so many months to perfect your dress, here’s a breakdown of the timeline—from purchasing your dream wedding dress to walking it down the aisle.

9-12+ months before the wedding: Once you say YES to your dream wedding dress, the bridal consultant will measure you and possible measure hollow to hem if the dress requires it.  Your wedding dress is crafted in many different areas of the world. The gowns are made to order.

3+ months before: The gown should be finished and at the salon. when you come in to try on your gown for the first time If you have not selected the headpiece, veil, and accessories this is a good time to do that. Just in case your gown is not in yet, you have wiggle room before the first fitting! If the salon had to place a rush delivery because the wedding date was much closer, then you may be starting your alterations weeks before the wedding. No worries because no matter what your wedding gown will be ready in plenty of time for your special day!

6 to 8 weeks before: If you start alterations at this point, Keep your weight stable from here on out.

On your 2nd or 3rd fitting: There may be minor tweaks (change neckline, trim train, Etc.).

1-2 weeks before: last fitting. The gown should be almost flawless. Try on your entire wedding look.

2 days before: Pick up your finished gown.

The Big Day: Show time!
